Articles : 5 Networking Tips for Introverts

If you’re an introvert, you probably already feel like you aren’t good at socializing, let alone networking. But this isn’t the case! Just because you take some time to warm up to those around you, it doesn’t mean that you aren’t able to network effectively.

So in this article, we are going to discuss five tips to help you realize the potential you already have!

1.  Do some research.
To help ease some of your nerves, you can prepare yourself by researching some of the exhibitors or vendors that are going to be at the networking event you are attending. By doing this, you can start to create a list of those you want to visit when you are at the event and do some research on them before you attend the event. It will help to familiarize yourself with them. You can also create a list of questions you’d like to ask them before heading to the event – easing pressure off of you from doing it on the spot.

2. Do more listening.
This comes quite naturally to introverts as you probably already know. Remember the list of questions you came up with from the last point? Those questions will allow you to do more listening when you are visiting each exhibitor at the event you’re attending. Networking isn’t just about talking; it also has to do with listening – making eye contact and certain body language shows that you are interested in what the other person is saying. Listening can be a very rare thing, so remember that!

3. Bring someone with you.
You could always have a friend or a family member tag along to help you feel more comfortable. Even if this other person isn’t helping you with anything, sometimes just having someone there with you can make all the difference in making you feel more at ease.

4. Get to the event early.
Can’t bring someone with you? Try heading out to the event early. Depending on the event there may not be as many people there at the beginning of the event versus mid-day or near the end. This can ease a bit of tension since you may not be “fighting” or “pushing” to have a conversation with your selected vendors.

5. Follow up after.
Ensure you get contact information from each person you speak with so you can send them a follow-up message after the event. It’s always nice to send a short message reiterating some of the key points you discussed with each individual and thanking each of them for their time. You never know, it may lead to a unique opportunity!
