Job Search Tips for Students
Posted: 10.27.2020
Searching for a job as a student can be challenging.
Not only are you trying to determine what career path interests you, you’re also struggling to gain the appropriate amount of experience to get your foot in the door.
Below are a few tips to help you get started.
1. Be open minded.
There is nothing wrong with knowing what you want out of your career, but especially when you have little to no experience, you don’t want to close too many doors. Being open to working at a company or within an industry that isn’t exactly what you’re looking for, can help you gain more of a professional portfolio that will help you long-term.
2. Write a resume.
You may be thinking why do I need a resume if I have little to no work experience? But it’s a good idea to have one ready noting your extra curricular activities, volunteer work, etc. Even though you weren’t paid, these types of experiences can still show a potential employer your work ethic.
3. Use social media.
Search for jobs using social media platforms like Instagram. A lot of companies market positions on these types of platforms to help them reach a younger audience much like yourself. If you aren’t already, sign up for a LinkedIn profile as well. It’s a great networking platform that can help you connect with professors, professionals in your desired industry, etc.

4. Let your family know you are looking for a job.
Your parents, for example, naturally have a lot of connections through their work. Perhaps there’s a co-op opportunity or summer student program at their company that could help you gain some experience.
5. Check with your guidance office.
Your guidance counsellor will be able to help you with things like your resume, where to find co-op positions or volunteer experience, they can provide you with career resources, etc.
6. Ensure your online profiles are clean and appropriate.
If you can, set your social media profiles to private so they are only seen by those who are following you. If you don’t want to do that, remember to avoid posting or sharing inappropriate content. Things like this can sway employers away from hiring you because they don’t want anything to negatively impact their company.
